Moore Appointed as NZ Ambassador to the U.S
(New Zealand) - January 2010
Former Labour Prime Minister, Mike Moore, has been named the new ambassador to the United States. Having previously headed the World Trade Organisation, he was nominated to the post by Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, and will replace Roy Ferguson.
McCully says Moore brings a huge amount of experience to the table, including his position as co-chair of the US-NZ Partnership Forum. "Moore is the best possible candidate for this important role ... The United States has agreed to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade negotiations and this will be a major focus for him as an ambassador - working with the U.S administration and congress, as well as business interests, as negotiations get underway."
Moore, who required some gentle persuasion to take on the appointment, says an FTA with the U.S is not a done deal and one that's likely to be met by strong resistance from American lobby groups. Furthermore it will need to be approved under U.S legislature.
"You can do the deal and we can get the substance done to show that it's in both countries' interests ... yet it has to go through their parliamentary system, which is far more complex than ours," says Moore.
