New Zealand Has Plenty to Brag About - Pass It On

(New Zealand) - April 2010

Earlier this month, Kiwi Expat Association (KEA) chairman Sir Stephen Tindall and hip-hop star Savage launched Pass It On, an online initiative that aims to turn almost one million New Zealanders living overseas into a virtual network of ambassadors for all things ‘cool’ and ‘Kiwi’.

Our expats are being asked to tell their mates and business contacts about everything that New Zealand has to offer via the new website – particularly while the eyes of the world are upon us, before and during the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

“The 2011 tournament is looming large on the horizon. Given how rare it is for this country to host a truly international event, it is the perfect opportunity for Kiwis abroad to reconnect with their homeland and tell everyone what is going on,” says Tindall.

“From our fashion designers and musicians, to yacht designers and superb pinot noir, we have talent and products that our international supporters can spread the word about.”

In creating Pass It On, KEA clicked on the childhood game of Chinese whispers and has dragged it onto the internet – the message being: “New Zealand has plenty to brag about; Pass It On”. KEA executive director, Ross McConnell, says our fashion designers, film-makers and musicians can use the Pass It On website to network and engage with Kiwis and ‘friends of New Zealand’ living overseas.

“Many Kiwis have done incredibly well overseas and have fantastic international networks as a result. This is a great opportunity for New Zealand to make the most of those connections, while the Rugby World Cup 2011 is generating interest in everything we have to offer,” says McConnell.

The Pass It On website features - fashion shorts by Twenty-Seven Names, Von Avi and Trix & Dandy; a video profile from designer David Trubridge; and music clips from Gin Wigmore and Ladi6. World famous New Zealanders like Kevin Roberts (Saatchi & Saatchi) and Peri Drysdale (Untouched World) have also contributed to the site, lending their voices to a blog aimed at starting conversations within the global Kiwi community.

Monthly prize draws will help drive traffic to the website, with winners receiving Kiwi-centric prizes. Up for grabs is an ‘Expat Reconnaissance Tour’, providing four Kiwis living overseas with the opportunity to bring their best non-Kiwi mates home for a week of experiences that highlight the very best that New Zealand has to offer.
