SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS

Q&A: Talking 'Sustainability' with Liz Collins from Chalky Digits

(New Zealand) - August 2009

What is your favourite ecostore product?

"The resounding word from the chalkydigits crew is ecostore’s laundry liquid. It’s the most luxurious, effective and gentle way to wash your chalkydigits gear – and the best bit? It has no nasty chemicals."

Hottest fashion advice for winter?

"Our best, and obviously quite biased, fashion tip for this winter is to get yourself one of chalkydigits funky, limited edition, woodcut badges of the cheeky, endangered South Island Robin. All proceeds from the sales of these cute badges go towards re-establishing these precious native birds upon pest-free Chalky Island in Fordland. At just NZ$15 each, this is an affordable way to funk up your winter wardrobe while making an important conservation statement. See our website for more details www.chalkydigits.co.nz."

What is the best sustainable tip you would give other fashion businesses?

"Keep it New Zealand made, of course. This ensures better quality control of your garments, supports our local economy by keeping New Zealanders employed, which is very important in these tough economic times, and shows your pride in our beautiful country and its inhabitants."

What is the worst crime in the fashion industry?

"Participating in the disposable society that devalues quality clothing by mass-manufacturing fashion that isn’t meant to last. We wholeheartedly endorse manufacturing high quality garments in timeless styles that can be worn for years."
