Q&A: Talking 'Sustainability' with Juliet Fay of Aduki
(New Zealand) - February 2010
What is your favourite ecostore product?
"We love ecostore’s Laundry Powder. All of our Aduki products are proudly machine washable and we love the fact that, with ecostore powder, you care for your clothes as well as the planet. It is also the easiest one to find in the array at the supermarket for front loading washing machines - great packaging."
Hottest fashion advice for summer?
"Lots of dresses. A one piece wonder is perfect for these hot, humid days, whether it be a dress in a cute printed floral or a simple cool viscose.
"Dresses that you can add layers to can create a whole new look for the coming autumn. Select pieces that are designed for longevity in design and quality, as it’s better for both the wallet and the environment. And, it's a lot of fun building new outfits with the simple addition of belts, cardigans and boots. Turn a relatively simple summer dress into an outfit for year-round wear."
What is the best sustainable tip you would give other fashion industry businesses?
"Try to be aware of wastage and cut down wherever possible. Start with simply turning computers and machines off at night to save power, like we did. And, consider the most economical lay plan for cutting a style so that less fabric is wasted.
"We are currently developing a children's Aduki brand that will help in reducing our fabric waste - stock line styles that can be slotted in and around current season lay plans.
"Aduki's relocation from Dunedin to Auckland in 2008, has reduced the number of kilometres that both raw and finished product needs to be carried. By being closer to our distributors and factories we are working towards making the company far more sustainable every day."
What’s the worst crime in the fashion industry?
"My biggest bug bear is leggings worn as pants. Unless you are 6ft tall, about a size six and a model, this should be illegal. We have developed a super stock line product called the Skinny Black, an ultra skinny pant, to do our little bit in the fight against leggings."
