NZ Fashion Festival
(New Zealand) - April 2010
The inaugural NZ Fashion Festival was marked by a sell-out show on March 16, featuring in-season collections from 17 of the country’s leading fashion brands. The 1,200-strong audience consisted of VIPs, media and consumers, with 700 tickets having gone on sale to the public at NZ$45.00 a pop. “We wanted to give people a taste of what an international festival show is like,” says festival co-owner, Myken Stewart.
For the official launch, Shed 12 on Auckland’s Wellesley Street was transformed into a fashion theatre with a 50m runway and seating three rows deep – serving up first-rate vistas and goodie-bags for the A-list and paying punters alike. Top-flight DJs, such as Nick.D, Clarke Gayford and Shannon Ryan, were also on hand to keep the energy up during-and-after the show.
The hour-long runway outing featured Autumn/Winter-2010 collections from - Adrian Hailwood, Andrea Moore, Annah Stretton, Barkers, Cybele, Ed Hardy, Helen Cherry, Huffer, Juliette Hogan, Kate Sylvester, Moochi, Paula Ryan, Stolen Girlfriends Club, The Carpenter’s Daughter, Trelise Cooper, Workshop and Zambesi.
Show producer Marissa Findlay says: “This show had a massive team. With 40 models and 25 dressers, as well as hair and make-up teams, the backstage crew consisted of more than 70 people.”
The festival, founded by the organisers of New Zealand Fashion Week, is geared towards the fashion loving public. And, this year’s show was followed by the NZ Herald Designer Garage Sale, which saw thousands of fashion conscious bargain hunters flock to the Viaduct Harbour Marine Village.
Based on hugely successful consumer fashion events offshore, most notably the long established Melbourne Fashion Festival, organisers say the initial event is just a taste of things to come. As the festival grows, so too will its schedule of events.
“Next year, we plan to have a long list of attractions – shows, parties, exhibitions and an international business seminar. The sky is the limit,” says Stewart.
