Eco Chic Takes Top Prize at Cult-Couture
(New Zealand) - December 2009
Fa'afafine designer Lindah Lepou has claimed yet another accolade, having scooped up the premier prize at the eighth annual Villa Maria Cult-Couture Awards. The event, held last month as part of the Manukau Festival of Arts, encouraged entries that present a unique Pacific interpretation of haute couture design.
Lepou, a former supreme award winner at Style Pasifika (remember the 'Cocomono' dress fashioned from polished coconut rings), took inspiration this time around from the challenges in re-using man-made products. Her winning design, fashioned from raffia-style recycled plastic, was an entry in the 'Recycled Revolution' category.
"Eco Chic is all about making the most of what we have and what we can afford," says Lepou, who also designs under the Dencium Compri label. "This victory proves that one woman's trash is another woman's fashion."
Organised by Manukau City Council and sponsored by Villa Maria, the annual awards are open to New Zealand fashion students, designers and artists. One of the judges, Rachael Churchwood, fashion stylist and editor of Black magazine, says the standard of entries were a huge step-up from previous years.
