A Breath of Fresh Air: Art Deco’s Fashionable Legacy
13 February to 27 June, 2010
Hawke's Bay Museum & Art Gallery
(New Zealand) - March 2010
The Art Deco movement swept away the cobwebs of the First World War. The austerity of wartime fashion was replaced with decorative, luxurious and modern styles that captured the spirit of the times. The glamour of the silver screen, the pattern and ornament of architecture and design, and the challenge of women’s liberation all combined to reshape fashion.
A Breath of Fresh Air profiles 60 years of Art Deco in fashion, looking at how the style and spirit of the time continues to resurface in fashion worldwide. The exhibition features unique examples from the collection of the Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust: Ruawharo Ta-u-Rangi, items from the public and a contemporary garment designed especially for the show by Kirsha Witcher of Salasai.
